INSIDER PROFILE: Renaissance |

Renaissance Carpet’s new Modern Renaissance division is led by
(l. to r.) Bryon Hamilton, Cherie Schnekenburger and Jeffrey Soleimani.
Slow and steady wins the race. Nearly 15 years after hip Tibetan rugs exploded in the American market, Renaissance Carpet & Tapestries is launching Modern Renaissance, its first contemporary division, which celebrates and aims to electrify the category with designs that are fresh, edgy and worth the wait.
This may be just like Aesop’s classic fable of The Tortoise and the Hare, where the slowpoke wins the race. For years Renaissance Carpet & Tapestries, known for its impeccable, formal French Aubussons, Savonneries and period tapestries, has been talking about getting into the contemporary side of the rug business. When the contemporary rug category exploded in the mid 1990s, with Tibetans and other constructions gradually morphing from hard-edged, avant-garde patterns and bold geometrics, into softer, organic drawings, colorscapes and more, the folks at Renaissance continued to finely knot their formal French masterpieces and think, “We should get into contemporary designs.”
