"Camel Flowers" in Bloom At Sun Bow Trading Company

An exhibition of rare, tribal Anatolian and Persian animal decorations from the private collection of Saul Barodofsky has opened at Sun Bow Trading Company - 110 South Street, in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia. U.S.A. The exhibition is free and open to the public - from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Monday through Saturday, continuing through September.

52 examples are featured — out of a total collection of over 300 pieces.  This is the first showing of this genre of Tribal Art in the United States. Included are handmade chest medallions (camel flowers), camel headdresses, bridles, knee-pads (shishajel), and whips - created mainly by women living along the old Silk Road.

These ‘decorations’ served to protect (by warding off evil), and to bring fertility to valued animals in the nomadic herds.  They also provided beauty, and a creative outlet for their mostly female crafters.

“Camel Flowers” highlights textile art no longer being produced in an increasingly modern world. Not for sale, the exhibition is another educational offering from Sun Bow Trading Company. A free exhibition brochure is available.
